10 Ways to Nail the Athleisure Look This Season

Athleisure, the blending of athletic and casual—or, sometimes, even formal clothing—is more than a disposable fashion trend. Born out of workout culture and sustained by the recent fitness boom, this decidedly practical style of dressing is here to stay—and that’s a good thing. When done right, you’ll feel comfortable, look polished, and be ready for whatever your day throws at you.

The beauty of athleisure is how easy it is—you don’t have to overthink it, and it’s hard to go too wrong. But with a few tips you can make sure your athleisure style is always on point! Here are my top 10.

GO HIGH AND LOW

Athleisure is all about mixing fitness and fashion, but “fashion” doesn’t have to mean unaffordable. I love matching high and low pieces together. If you look, you can find great-looking pieces for almost any budget.

PULL IT TOGETHER WITH TEXTURE

Sweatpants and a tailored coat can come off as a jarring combination. But the textured sweater bridges these two pieces and ties the whole look together. I dig this look because it’s still casual and sporty but also versatile enough to wear to a meeting or even a night on the town.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO TRY NEW THINGS

I like to constantly test my style. For example, in this look I’m rocking an extra-long sweater T-shirt that I got at discount from Asos. At first, I found it intimidating, but when I paired it with a cool sweatpant and leather jacket, it worked!

UP YOUR VERSATILITY WTH LAYERS

Spring evenings can get chilly, so layers are always a good option for transitioning from day to night. I went from the gym to an evening dinner meeting in this outfit. And layering doesn’t necessarily mean encasing yourself in bulky outerwear—a down vest will keep you warm without weighing you down, and it’s easy to stash in a backpack.

BUTTON DOWN YOUR STYLE

I wouldn’t usually put a classic button-down shirt in my athleisure rotation (and never a dress shirt) but this one has a bold print and a slim silhouette. Show your best-fitting button-down shirts there’s life beyond business casual. They pair surprisingly well with sweatpants on a breezy day. It’s getting warmer out, and this is a great go-to look—one of my favorites.

TRUST BLACK, WHITE, AND GRAY

When you look at it, this entire look—even the backpack—is made up of no more than three colors. You don’t need more than that. When in doubt, go with black, white and gray—it’s a foolproof combination that’s almost impossible to mess up!

BREAK SOME RULES

Who says you need a T-shirt under long sleeves? If you’re going somewhere where the dress code is shirt optional, use that option! A lightweight hoodie—or even outerwear—will get you from A to B, and cut down time from B to Ahhh. I love this look for a spring outing in the city.

TURN UP FOR SUMMER

I’m from Hawaii, so anytime I can work board shorts into my day-to-day style, I do it. We just had what felt like the longest winter ever—let’s hit summer with everything we’ve got!

DON’T KEEP YOUR SOCKS A SECRET

The unusual combination of pushed-down high socks and pulled-up sweatpants is what makes this look work—it’s something that’s super easy to do with pieces you probably already have. Give it a try! And don’t overthink color combinations—going with the same color for both is a no-fail move.

COLOR YOUR EXPENDABLES

At the heart of athleisure is comfort and versatility—dressing in a way that prepares you for whatever the day throws at you, from a workout to a lunch meeting. So the last thing you want to do is make a statement with core items like your shirt or pants and be stuck with a loud piece all day. When you want to add a pop of color, use your backpack or sneakers, which you can slip off your shoulder for a meeting or kick off your feet in the park.
